Second Life ….just what is it?

The online virtual world called Second Life (created by Linden Lab) can be reached with the same interface via Windows, Mac OS X or Linux computer machines. The software download and membership are free. If you’ve heard of Second Life and want to take a look and experience it for yourself firsthand…go ahead!

Second Life is a simulated 3D environment, in which players move about, interact with each other, and manipulate the environment. While Second Life at first may seem like 3D games that allow players to customize the appearance of their “avatars” or personifications, Second Life is not a game — SL doesn’t have built-in activities designed by Linden Lab for members to participate in. But a lot of events and actions take place in Second Life. They are created by members or “residents” within Second Life itself using three-dimensional objects and scripts to govern their functions. Universities are buying space in Second Life. Organizations (even churches and monasteries) are taking space in SL. Businesses (IBM, Nissan, and many others) are present as well. Some are speculating even that Second Life will either become or replace the Internet as we know it today.
